Mukluk Fire Evacuation Area Reduced

Posted

The Alaska Division of Forestry and Fire Protection announced on August 25 that Level 3- GO! Evacuation levels are no longer in place outside of the existing footprint of the Mukluk Fire. Properties within the burned area are still unsafe for return to due to pockets of ash, unstable trees, and other hazards.

As of August 25, the 7,260 acre fire was reported to be 29% contained.

Rainy weather last week aided crews in slowing the fire’s spread and protecting residences. The blaze is estimated to have destroyed over 40 homes. While the cause is still under investigation, early reports indicate powerlines may have started the fire.

Donations have poured in, including items and funds gathered locally by the Glennallen Future Farmers of America chapter. While in-kind donations are being accepted, community members have requested that potential donors reach out to John Rusyniak at John.Rusyniak@gmail.com to determine what is needed.

Financial donations can be sent to Pay it Forward- Blessings account at Denali State Bank to account number 301139623, Routing # 125200921. The public Facebook page “Mukluk Fire” also has direct links to individuals’ GoFundMe pages.

Volunteer crews have begun construction of temporary heated tiny homes to help residents get through the coming winter. Volunteers are also coordinating food for displaced families and sorting donated supplies. Interested volunteers should reach out to Rusyniak.
