Consider our Mission Statement: The Copper River Record is a weekly newspaper that connects the far-flung communities within the Copper Basin, highlights people and places that make our region unique, and informs our readers about developments that could impact their lives. We serve trusted information to readers with varied cultures, beliefs, and values. While we have grown, we strive to remain true to our roots as a community newsletter.
If you have something to say along those lines, we want to hear from you!
We aspire to follow the Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics in our work. For more information, please visit https://www.spj.org/spj-code-of-ethics/
We are always looking for contributors who would like to be paid for their time. Coverage that is especially needed includes local government, annual meetings, and community events. We strongly prefer in person coverage. No experience is required, and paid training is available. The main requirement is a genuine interest in local community.
The subject of an article must be within the Copper Basin or surrounding areas including Eastern Prince William Sound, Lake Louise, and Valdez. Articles must be agreed upon with the editor before work starts. They can be pitched (your idea) or assigned (our idea).
Our budget for investigative reporting is limited, but we are open to cooperate with freelancers to pursue relevant, story specific grants.
We provide equal opportunity to all potential contractors without regard to race, color, religion, age, sex, national origin, disability status, or sexual orientation. We value diversity and strive to feature voices representing the range of people who live in our area.

When considering a Press Release, our main questions are: Does this press release contain directly useful information for our readers? Is this press release specifically relevant to the Copper Basin and surrounding areas? Is this information or advertising?
We prioritize press releases that deliver needed information from local agencies to our readers, such as hunting and fishing announcements and public land updates. We value our role in facilitating communication between these public agencies and the noncentralized population we serve.
We also prioritize press releases from Tribal councils and Tribal administrators seeking to communicate with the larger area.
We often publish press releases sharing opportunities such as grants, camps, upcoming events or other helpful programs, and prioritize non profit submissions. These are published on a space available basis.
We do not publish “advertorials.”
We reserve the right to edit for grammar or brevity. Some fact checking may be needed prior to publication.
