Book Review: Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs

Posted

Although this is a tough read, remember this is the actual account of the author.  I finished this days ago and I still can’t shake the weight of what the reality of slavery is. It’s brave, inspiring but equally tragic & devastating. We do not know suffering in the way Black slaves in the USA knew it.

Can you imagine having a baby and praying the new life does not take its first breath but dies so it does not ever know the sad, tense, deplorable and painful life of a slave? Ms. Jacobs does not shy from confronting the evils of slavery. She showed us the honest, disastrous, unexaggerated historical accounts of her life.

The writing is simple & easy to understand but beautiful, despite her lack of education. There’s parts that p’d me off, parts that left me speechless (if you know me, I’m hardly left without words), there were also parts that left me proud of Harriet and how a mother’s instinct can not be caged.

Although this was published in 1861 it will make you think hard about racism and slavery.  As Juneteenth came & went this year & yes slavery is over, we still, in 2026 see hate crimes, discrimination and prejudices for people of color.

I think everyone should read this book.

“There are no bonds so strong as those which are formed by suffering together.”

Dang this one hurt, bad!
