JUNEAU, ALASKA — The Juneau Arts & Humanities Council Gallery Season 52 kicked off at the Davis Gallery in Centennial Hall this month featuring daily prints, a letterpress exhibition by Alaska-based printer and photographer Kirsten Mashinter Lawrence.
This exhibit opened during First Friday, January 2, from 4-7pm. The public was invited to attend the opening reception to meet the artist, print a postcard on a tabletop press, and enjoy light refreshments.
Currently based in Kenny Lake, Alaska, Lawrence brings a deeply personal and process-driven approach to both photography and letterpress. Her creative practice has been shaped by nearly two decades spent working internationally in Japan, Kosovo, Bulgaria, Georgia, and Tajikistan, as well as by long periods living and working in Nevada’s Great Basin region. Across mediums, Lawrence’s work reflects close attention to color, emotion, and the often-overlooked details of everyday life.

daily prints emerged shortly after Lawrence returned to Alaska in 2024. Having let go of 25 years of handwritten journals before her move, she sought a new way to record daily reflections without accumulating another archive of notebooks. Turning to letterpress printing, she began creating one small print each day, using wood type, ink, and a tabletop press as a tactile alternative to traditional journaling.
Since November 27, 2024, Lawrence has produced a daily print reflecting a specific moment, thought, or feeling. Sometimes joyful, sometimes anxious, the works form a colorful, text-based record of lived experience. By approaching letterpress as a journaling practice rather than a commercial product, Lawrence allows space for experimentation with color, text, and layered compositions. Each print exists as a unique edition of one, with two artist proofs.
The exhibition is not intended as a finished narrative, but rather as an ongoing collection of moments - “snippets of time” - that continues to evolve. Artist proofs are available for purchase, and visitors can explore the full chronological series through a QR code displayed in the gallery or at bluemashstudio.com.
daily prints will be on exhibit in the Davis Gallery at Centennial Hall through March 2026.
