Upstream Learning Teams Participate in State Robotics Competition

Posted

Two robotics teams representing Copper River School District’s Upstream Learning participated in the First Tech Challenge state robotics tournament the weekend of February 6 through 7 at Colony High School.  Both teams are coached by Mark Proch, support teacher for Upstream Learning. This was Glennallen-based Tundra Tech’s second year qualifying for state competition, while the rookie team, Circat Breakers, from Kenny Lake, made its first appearance at the state competition.

Both teams participated alongside thirty-eight teams from around Alaska, including Southeast, Fairbanks, Anchorage, and MatSu Valley.  Tundra Tech finished the competition placing 12th, while Circat Breakers placed 23rd.  Although neither team participated in the final elimination rounds, both teams gave impressive performances against other strong scoring teams and have shown remarkable improvement and skills in coding, robot design, building, and operation. Tundra Tech also received Honorable Mention for the Design Award, given to the team that best demonstrates a balance in industrial design, form, function, and aesthetics.

FIRST Tech Challenge immerses 7th through 12th grade students in robot design, coding, team collaboration, and competition.  It provides student opportunities to engage in developing real-world STEM skills, building confidence and exploring potential careers.

The teams would like to thank all their generous sponsors who have made it possible to purchase equipment and parts for building their robots.  Sponsors this year include ASEA local 52 and SAME (Society of American Military Engineers) Foundation grants,  secured by Ahtna Shareholder Advocate M. Starr Knighten.
